This is another one on tech. I figured I might as well point it out, because sometimes it seems like we’re just treading water.
10 years ago, your only real choice for graphical browsing was NETSCAPE, think about that a bit.
20 years ago you had 3 choices for distros: SLS, Slackware, Your own.
21 years ago those sls and your own were really your only choices, there were no BSDs because of a lawsuit.
Up until about 10 years ago, gtk+ was the only free widget set, and kde was de-facto nonfree because of it(again, and think about this, gnome was the ONLY fully free desktop environment, except maybe xfce, yes, it’s that old.)
Here’s another one for you, 20 years ago redhat didn’t exist. Kinda hard to imagine now, isn’t it? I mean, redhat does everything.
EDIT: To make things a bit more clear, here is your desktop in 1996, pretty, isn’t it? Sorry about wine netscape, I couldn’t find 3.0 for unix. Also note that in 1992 slackware was basically just a set of patches for SLS, not its own distro.
